# Custom solution or off-the-shelf software?

By [Bjarne Fomferra](https://nucez.com/en/about) · 11.08.2026

Not every problem needs its own software. Often the most honest recommendation is: take the ready-made tool, it's enough. But just as often a business squeezes itself for years into a program that never quite fits. The question isn't custom versus standard, it's: what fits your workflow?

## [When standard is enough](https://nucez.com/en/themen/schnittstellen)

Off-the-shelf software and SaaS are good when your needs are common. Accounting, email, a shop system, a CRM: there are mature products for these that millions of people use. Advantages:

- **Available right away**, no development effort.
- **Cheap to get started**, the costs are shared across many customers.
- **Maintained and updated**, without you having to take care of it.

If a ready-made product covers 90 percent of your needs and the remaining 10 percent don't hurt, the answer is clear.

## [When custom pays off](https://nucez.com/en/themen/schnittstellen)

Custom software pays off when the workflow is what sets you apart, or when no standard product fits. Typical signs:

- You **type data by hand** back and forth between systems.
- You **pay for features** you never use, and the one you need is missing.
- Your process is so specific that every ready-made tool only works with contortions.
- You want to **own** the solution instead of being tied to one vendor forever.

Then your own software pays for itself, because it adapts to you, not the other way around.

## [The most common path: standard plus integration](https://nucez.com/en/themen/schnittstellen)

In practice it's rarely either or. Most of the time the proven standard system stays in place, and an [integration](https://nucez.com/en/themen/schnittstellen) or a plugin closes exactly the gap. You keep the advantages of the ready-made product and still get the part that fits you. That's often the cheapest solution with the fastest payback.

## [Questions to ask yourself](https://nucez.com/en/themen/schnittstellen)

- Is there a ready-made product that covers the core?
- What do the contortions cost if I adapt myself instead of the software?
- Is the process a competitive advantage or just administration?

## [In short](https://nucez.com/en/themen/schnittstellen)

Standard where it's enough. Custom where it counts. And often a middle ground of both. What custom software roughly costs is covered in [What does custom software cost?](https://nucez.com/en/blog/was-kostet-individualsoftware)

In short

When off-the-shelf software or SaaS is enough, when a custom solution pays off, and why the most common path is a middle ground.
