# JTL-Wawi plugins: three pitfalls that cost time

By [Bjarne Fomferra](https://nucez.com/en/about) · 08.07.2026

Extensions in the JTL ecosystem are rarely technically difficult. They get expensive because of assumptions nobody said out loud.

## [1. Updates are considered too late](https://nucez.com/en/blog/jtl-wawi-anpassen-grenzen)

A plugin that accesses table structures directly works right up until the next version jump. If you consistently go through the intended interfaces instead, you save yourself the repair every six months.

Practical rule: every direct query on a table gets a comment with the reason. If it says "was faster", that's not a reason.

## [2. The data sync has no direction](https://nucez.com/en/blog/jtl-wawi-anpassen-grenzen)

Wawi, shop and marketplace all three hold a stock level. Without a defined leading source you get a ping-pong that only gets noticed when an item is oversold.

Before the first line of code, it should be settled for each field which system wins and what happens in a conflict. That's half an hour of work and saves weeks.

## [3. Errors vanish into nowhere](https://nucez.com/en/blog/jtl-wawi-anpassen-grenzen)

A sync that fails silently is worse than one that aborts loudly. Every run needs a log, a retry with increasing intervals, and a notification when the retry finally gives up.

## [What follows from this](https://nucez.com/en/blog/jtl-wawi-anpassen-grenzen)

The real effort isn't in the feature, it's in the question of what happens when things go wrong. If you settle that up front, you get an extension that still runs two years from now.

How far the Wawi can be customized at all is something I described in [How far can you customize JTL-Wawi?](https://nucez.com/en/blog/jtl-wawi-anpassen-grenzen) A concrete example is [a module that brings quotes straight from the shop into the Wawi](https://nucez.com/en/blog/jtl-wawi-angebote-aus-dem-shop).
