SEO in plain words: what really counts

SEO without buzzword bingo: the three pillars of technology, content and authority, and what you can skip.

To many people SEO sounds like secret knowledge and expensive agencies. It is not. SEO is craft. It is about helping search engines find your pages, understand them and trust them. Nothing more.

Let me explain it without buzzwords, in three parts.

Pillar 1: Technology

Before anyone can read your content, the search engine has to reach it in the first place. That includes:

  • Crawlability: the search engine robot has to be able to open your pages.
  • Indexing: the pages have to be allowed into the search engine's directory.
  • Load time: a fast page gets served more happily. More on that in Core Web Vitals.
  • Mobile: most people search on their phone. A page that does not work there loses.
  • Structure: clean headings, clear addresses and structured data.

Pillar 2: Content

Technology alone is worth nothing if the content does not fit. The most important question is always: does the page answer what someone is actually searching for?

Write for people, not for the algorithm. Concrete, honest, to the point. A page that clearly answers one question beats ten pages full of filler words.

Pillar 3: Authority

Search engines trust pages that others take seriously too. When reputable websites link to you or mention you, that works like a recommendation. Authority grows slowly and honestly, through real work and real relationships.

What you can skip

  • Keyword stuffing, meaning cramming the same word into a text twenty times.
  • Tricks meant to fool the search engine. Google is faster than you think.
  • Bought links in bulk. It gets found out and does more harm than good.

In short

Fast, understandable, honest. If those three things are right, most of SEO is already done. The rest is fine-tuning.

Why that is no longer enough today, and what comes on top, is in SEO is not enough anymore: now GEO matters too. If you want your site checked, take a look at my SEO and GEO analysis.
